Even though I am no longer a classroom teacher, August often fills me with wonder – awe, amazement and curiosity. It’s like the last flavor of summer. A friend said to me once, that June was like Friday night, July was Saturday and August was Sunday. I am to savor those last days before the rush of fall busyness. My body clock is still on this mysterious calendar of the school year, I do think many of us are sensitive to the changing seasons, regardless of the school year.
What does the changing season signal to you? For me, it’s a signal to reassess my dreams, goals and focus. I want to check in with my own wonder and interests on a monthly or quarterly basis I did that as an educator, but they weren’t necessarily my dreams, goals and desires – they were imposed on me. Now I get to wonder with women, write, and coach to connect women to God, themselves and others, discovering self-care habits that stick, bringing hope and healing- and moving forward out of overwhelm into this amazing life. The best part is we get to do it together!
In Henriette Anne Klauser’s book, Write It Down, Make It Happen, she suggests writing down all your hopes, dreams and wishes. By doing that, she says, you give your brain a chance to begin to notice your world around you. It activates your reticular activating system (RAS). For example, when you buy a new car, do you begin to notice how many of that type of car are on the roads? That’s how your brain works. It begins to send to your conscious brain what’s more important to you.
How do you awaken a sense of wonder for your dreams, passions and surroundings? When writing down things you may want to wonder about, you are implementing your RAS part of your brain and setting yourself up for more and more awe. What could be truly amazing for you even this month? What will it take to get you started? Once you get started, you get your momentum going.
I have my list of dreams, wishes and hopes. It keeps growing!! I was surprised how it got me tuned into the importance of writing and sharing my hopes and dreams with all of you. It is how my weekly blog came into being:-)
What about you? What does your path look like this fall? How can I support your wonders and dreams? Often, one step is all it takes to get your going. What could that look like, sound like, feel like? What are your possibilities?
